Roots of Resilience is a youth mental wellness and leadership program created by Maya’s Love for middle and high school students. Designed as a small-cohort experience, the program creates a supportive space where young people can build emotional resilience, confidence, leadership skills, and meaningful community connections.
Running from February through April, students participate in monthly full-cohort sessions focused on mental wellness, self-care, growth mindset, leadership development, and community engagement. High school students also participate in additional internship sessions centered on digital storytelling, advocacy, and youth voice initiatives.
Students participating in Roots of Resilience represent schools and communities across South Texas, creating opportunities for connection, collaboration, mentorship, and shared leadership experiences among youth from diverse backgrounds and experiences.
At the heart of Roots of Resilience is the belief that young people deserve spaces where they feel seen, supported, empowered, and equipped with tools to care for themselves and their communities.
4 high school student interns participated in the pilot year of the program, representing 3 different schools across South Texas and laying the foundation for youth-centered wellness and leadership programming through Maya’s Love.
2 student interns from 2 different schools participated in a smaller, mentorship-focused cohort centered on individualized support, relationship building, and mental wellness development.
13 high school student interns participated, representing 9 different schools across South Texas. This growth reflected increased community trust, program visibility, and growing demand for accessible youth mental wellness and leadership spaces.
14 students participated, including:
7 High School Interns
7 Middle School Fellows
Students represented 12 different schools across South Texas, allowing Maya’s Love to expand mentorship, peer connection, and youth advocacy opportunities while supporting students earlier in their leadership and wellness journeys.
This teaser is the beginning of our 2026 Roots of Resilience student series, highlighting high school voices sharing their own reflections, experiences, and perspectives on mental health.
Each week, we will feature one student and their perspective. Real conversations led by youth who are showing up, speaking out, and creating space for others. At Maya’s Love, we believe mental health conversations should be honest, inclusive, and youth-led and this is what that looks like. 🌱
